This means that many people suffer unnecessarily every time they visit the dentist, or even worse, avoid trips to the dentist because of their fear. Fortunately, for anxious patients there is no longer a need to sacrifice your dental health.

Our Pain Management Options

This is one of the most common options for pain relief, where we can temporarily numb a small area within your mouth. Local anaesthetics stop the nerves in a part of your body sending signals to your brain. You won't be able to feel any pain after having a local anesthesia, although you may still feel some pressure or movement. It normally only takes a few minutes to lose feeling in the area where a local anaesthetic is given. You will be awake and alert, but you won't feel pain in the area being treated.

This method works by administering sedatives intravenously, putting you in a semi-conscious state, so you are unaware and unable to remember the events happening around you. When the sedative takes effect, you will generally feel extremely relaxed and, in a dream-like state of mind. We will also use a local anaesthetic to numb the area we are working on, to help ensure that there is no way of feeling any pain during the dental procedure.

Under general anaesthesia, you don't feel pain because you're completely unconscious. This method is typically used for longer procedures, or if you have a lot of anxiety that might interfere with your treatment. You will be in a completely unconscious state, and the level of anesthesia depends on the procedure and the individual patient. There are different risks with general anesthesia, so it's best you discuss all of your options with our experienced dentists at the Carnegie Dental Group to decide which option is best for you.
